Samuel Alito for Supreme Court Justice?

Samuel Alito coasted toward probable confirmation as the 110th Supreme Court justice Thursday, January 12, 2006.  The the only question after 18 hours of Senate interrogation is how many Democrats would support him since the Republicans seem happy with this choice. The Alito discussion battles on:

One day they say "The Democrats are not being very tough in their questioning"....the next day "The Democrats are tearing Judge Alito apart...they even made his wife cry"

Come on she probably cried because she had to sit there all day listening to all those blowhards, Replicans and Democrats.....or maybe she just had to go to the bathroom....

Your life is an open book when you go into public office or want to sit on the Court...so be prepared for questions about your life.....if you say you can't remember...you are  being evasive and that just opens up more questions.
The judge is a smart man...so I doubt if he doesn't remember....he just doesn't want to admit to certain things.

Come on they aren't too particular...after all, Clarence Thomas got on the Supreme Court after he was accused of some very vulgar sexual harassment.  but, he was supposed to be a big conservative?  And they needed a black person.....so there he is.

Stop whining!

Linda Stone, Phoenix, AZ

I have been watching as much as I can and it has been very interesting. I think the TV pundits exaggerate everything.  I have not seen him be that evasive.  Not remembering things from 30 years ago is normal to me.  I don't know exactly what I was thinking 20 years ago. Hell, I can barely manage that from month to month.

I have some issues with his record but my instinct from hearing his testimony leads me to believe he is not the devil or someone who will destroy the balance of our court.
He seems pretty damn reasonable and intelligent to me. That’s going on my instincts alone.

I wish someone like lawyer Gerry Spence was on the court.  He is a guy I have tremendous respect for. I have read two of his books which are great reads.

But what do I know. That's the problem with this whole thing. We elect these people to elect the justices so they will either do a good job or not. We have no control over it other than to watch the circus.

(here is a written thought of Gerry Spence)

The Rat Hole
We see this pathetic figure, the one with the wild, frightened eyes of a rat in a trap, dirty, perhaps lice-ridden, this Saddam Hussein, this once feared despot who has tortured and killed and terrorized nations and horded untold riches for himself. Today we could pass him on the street with a begging bowl and he would blend in unnoticed in a culture of homeless lost souls. Indeed, he is one.
We can learn something here. This was a man of terrible power. Saddam Hussein had choices. From the wealth of oil he could have built a paradise for his people. He could have chosen to educate the children of Iraq and create unimagined opportunities for their parents. Instead he stole the nation’s wealth and murdered and terrorized the innocent. Where he could have become the beloved father of his county his choices consumed him, transformed him, and ultimately revealed him for what he became3⁄4a soulless man found in a six foot deep dirt hole with no better credentials for his space on this earth than a rat in its own hole.
Power loves itself and seeks more of it.
As the most powerful nation in the history of the world we also have choices. We have the power to dominate and intimidate, to attack and destroy, to subjugate the people of this world for our own gain and to force the ideals of imperialism both here and abroad. Indeed, we have the same choices as were offered Saddam Hussein. At last, we are defined by how we use our power.
Power often stands in the way of learning. Wisdom revealed by simple lessons is hard to see for leaders wearing the blinders of power. But we, too, have choices. We can relieve much of the suffering in this world and promote the potential of the species, or we can, following the example of Saddam, horde our power and exercise it for our own aggrandizement. We can build great palaces of worldly wealth and gather immense armies to protect it or we can join the brotherhood of man and seek a lasting peace founded on love and justice.
In making these choices ought we not remember that rat holes come in all sizes?

What frightens me about Alito is what we do know about him. He has written in the past that he is especially proud of his work to do away with womens' reproductive choice. Now, when confronted about such things, he answers by saying, basically, "Hey, I was trying to get a job; you say things you think will help." THAT'S supposed to sound good when you're interviewing for the next job?
I'm with Joe Biden; these hearings are a joke. Might as well do away with them and simply vote on the candidate based on what they already know of him.

- Tom Sparks, Seattle

I think we just got a major heifer dust cloud up there in that Senate hall.  And I do have to say Biden's right, these judicial nomination hearings have become a joke...how did these guys get through law school with such poor memories...a law student's stock in trade, the one thing a person has to have to even get through the first year, is a good memory.   But,  you are right about Roe vs. Wade because they don't want to overturn it they just want it as a religious rabblerousing issue while letting states like North Dakota make it impossible for women to get an abortion unless they have bags of money to go to New York or something.  People with money will still be able to hustle their 16-year olds off to the abortionist while the working class 16 year old will have to deal with a coat hanger.  Works for the Republicans very nicely.  Furthermore, any Supreme Court that includes Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts scares the hell out of me too.  You, at least, will live to see them replaced.  I'm stuck with this Supreme Courts decisions for the rest of my life.

Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito has generated a search buzz about Immigration, Family Values, Abortion, and Gay Issues.  Will there be a Filibuster?  We hope the Democrats stand up and do something to save the highest court of the land.  People are interested in what Kennedy, Spector, and others have to say about Alito but stock brokers are worried about his Mutual Funds and stock picks to see if he’s diversified and a good investor to be a good candidate for the Supreme Court.
