Walmart & Destructive Corporate Behavior
Walmart still not "doing the right thing" Let me put it another way. We Americans and the rest of the highly industrialized nations are creating buying patterns that have created the most consumptive and thoughtless creatures in the universe. We need less stores and strip malls and fast food joints NOT MORE. We need more grass and fields and farm land. Wal-Mart may be successful in an economic world. But is that why humans exist? To buy things. To shop and consume and then trash these things to make room for more? To not learn to recycle our goods into other useful goods and only be a throw away society? I am arguing against this very destructive lifestyle. It has poisoned our spirits and made us weak. Made us less dependent on each other and more dependent on non-renewable resources and bad habits. we fill up our homes with cheap crap, use it for a few months or a year and then send it away to mass graves of useless crap. Wal-Mart and the shopping malls across what used to be millions of acres of diverse land and fertile ecosystems. We end up with millions of acres of non-porous roofs and roads and parking lots that create horrendous water run-off problems. The Ford motor company is re-designing it's original factory into a new model of architecture. Grass roofs that absorb water instead of it running off and being wasted. Plant filled ponds that catch the water run-off and purify it so it can be re-used by the factory. I applaud this re-thinking of industry and more people and nature friendly settings. There are much smarter ways to design industries so they create biological nutrients and technical nutrients that can be recycled back into nature or into new products instead of being thrown away after its first and only use. We are smart and incredible beings when we choose to be. I want us to be more aware of how we impact the life system that supports us. be less concerned with profit and convenience. and more concerned with the quality of a life lived with awareness and reverence for the gift of life. -Derek, LiveReal Columnist Walmart looks to stay dynamic and continually change to become a better citizen; more than I can say for most of us. Walmart continually stays dynamic moving to higher standards. although, I'm not so sure how much money a cart gatherer, or a 3AM shelf stocker, or the guy at the door that checks your id when you come in and a diff one that checks your receipt, and so on -- I'm not so sure how much money they should be making. How much would you think a 3AM shelf stocker should make? All I ever saw at WalMart locations all over OKC was 50+ other retail stores pop up wherever WalMart built. If you think this is bad; then a debate with you is pretty goofy of me. I notice many times we do agree though. so sorry if I get on my soap box to defend my neighbor, friends, and others tied to Bentonville Arkansas. If Walmart was not dynamic; they would go away in a heartbeat -- just as TG&Y did several years ago. TG&Y was once king of retail; noone could imagine hitting TG&Y for most anything. I think you love nature; but the explosion of humans has to be encountered with progress; or they will get hungry and shoot each other. wow, that was a bad analogy! -Mike D, Conservative
There are plenty of facts out there that you continue to ignore. Many lawsuits have been filed, many citizen action committees formed to deal with the explosive growth of Wal-Mart stores, and many documented occasions of Wal-Mart benefiting from city and state money. You seem to only focus on some of the benefits - but chose to also ignore the valid criticisms. Is that what this country means to you? Ignoring injustice? Why do you defend their intentionally destructive behaviors. Wouldn't it be better if we held them accountable and held them to higher standards? And your percentage fact on corporate taxes is way the hell off. Corporations are paying less in taxes than anytime before. In the 60's corporations were paying in the 30% rate. But now these henhouse foxes are getting massive tax cuts and pouring the savings into campaign contributions which. BY THE WAY, has caused all the corruption that has driven America insane. Why is this county so poorly managed?? EXTREMELY BAD leadership. AND Lazy Ignorant Citizens. -Derik, LiveReal Columnist What the heck is it that makes your interpretation of "facts" any better than mine? I have worked with WalMart employees all of my life. They are a community Blessing and Good for All. I think most of this WalMart hate is drummed up in lies; and I will take my integrity up against the Moores and whoever that other sleazeball is that is putting out an anti-WalMart movie (just to make a buck) anytime. the unions putting out so much lying on WalMart is sure lowering my opinions of unions. if you listened to the liberal media you would think people that drive another mile to shop at Target or Costco are buying a ticket to the next life. I kinda doubt it. and, your comment on socialism was unbelievable. Corporations today are paying 35 to 45 % of all they make to the gov; just who do you think will support the gov (which is social security, medicare, etc.) if Corporations are not healthy and making a profit??!! -Mike D, Conservative I think they should take some of the responsibility for this. Don't You? If you think Wal-Mart has integrity you either have really LOW standards or you refuse to pay attention to the actual facts of Wal-Mart business practices. -Tom, Liberal Viewpoint This discussion is based on the New York Times Article November 1, 2005: A New Weapon for Wal-Mart: A War Room) |
